Brief Description

The Therapeutic Alliance Scale for Children - Revised is designed to assess the strength of the therapeutic relationship between a child and their therapist. Respondents answer items that evaluate key aspects of the alliance, such as trust, collaboration, and mutual agreement on therapeutic goals (e.g., “I feel like my therapist is on my side and tries to help me.”). Responses range from “Not true” to “Very much true.” This scale is particularly useful for therapists and supervisors to receive feedback and monitor how well the child and therapist are working together, which can influence treatment outcomes.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

Responses are provided using a 4-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (“Not true”) to 4 (“Very much true”). Items 2, 5, 7, 8, and 11 are reverse-scored. Scoring the measure involves summing the responses from each item to generate a total score. Total scores range from 12 to 48, with higher scores indicating a stronger therapeutic alliance. There is no cutoff score. The total score can help clinicians assess areas where the alliance may need improvement or affirm that the relationship is progressing well. Consistent low scores could suggest difficulties in the therapeutic relationship that may warrant further exploration or intervention, while higher scores typically reflect a positive and collaborative working relationship between the child and therapist. Clinicians can use these insights to guide treatment planning and communication strategies with both the child and their family.
