Self Compassion Scale, Short Form (SCS-SF)
Updated over 4 months ago

Brief Description

The Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF) is a self-report tool that measures the level of self-compassion an individual has, which is defined as how they relate to themselves in instances of perceived failure, inadequacy, or personal suffering. The SCS-SF consists of 12 questions, all taken from the original Self-Compassion Scale, that represent 6 dimensions: self-kindness, self-judgment, common humanity, isolation, mindfulness, and over-identification. The SCS-SF helps in understanding how individuals treat themselves during difficult times and their capacity for self-compassion, which can be a critical factor in mental health and well-being.

No recommended standard frequency. Blueprint recommends monthly or as clinically indicated.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The SCS-SF consists of 12 questions that are answered using a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (“Almost never”) to 5 (“Almost always”). Questions 1, 4, 8, 9, 11 and 12 are reverse scored. Each dimension measured is a subscale that is represented by two items (see table below).

Dimension (Subscale)

Questions

Self-Kindness

2, 6

Self-Judgment

11, 12

Common Humanity

5, 10

Isolation

4, 8

Mindfulness

3, 7

Over-Identification

1, 9

Each subscale score is calculated by averaging the corresponding two item scores. The total self-compassion score is calculated as an average of all the subscale scores (i.e., average of all the items).

There are no clinical norms or scores established to indicate a level of an individual’s level of self-compassion. Instead, SCS-SF total scores are used primarily to compare one individual’s self-compassion state from one date of administration to the next. However, see a suggested ad hoc rubric by the author below:

1.0-2.49

Low self-compassion

2.5-3.5

Moderate self-compassion
