Brief Description
The Severity Measure for Panic Disorder—Adult measures the severity of panic disorder related symptoms. It is typically completed by clients who have already been diagnosed with panic disorder or have shown clinically significant symptoms. A panic attack is an episode of intense fear that can be triggered or occur out of the blue. The symptoms of a panic attack include: a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating, and fear of losing control or dying. The SMPD functions as a way to increase awareness of panic symptoms throughout the week and track progress over time. Respondents rate how often they experience the panic symptoms listed over the past 7 days (e.g., “felt anxious, worried, or nervous about having more panic attacks”) on a scale from “Never” to “All of the time.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The SMPD is scored on a 5-point Likert scale from 0 ("Never") to 4 ("All the time”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 40; higher scores are associated with higher severity of panic disorder.
