Brief Description

The Measuring Adverse Events measure is adapted from the Frequency, Intensity, Burden of Side Effects Rating (FIBSER) scale, which is a 3-item scale to assess side effects from antidepressant treatment. Specifically, this measure enquires about the frequency, intensity, and burden associated with taking medication. This measure is one of the most widely used measures for assessing medication side effects and is unique in its brevity and clinical utility.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The first two items (i.e., frequent, intensity) are used to provide clinical information and are not relevant for scoring. The third item (i.e., burden) is used to produce a score, which is interpreted as follows:

Score

Interpretation

0-2

None to Mild interference with activities

3-4

Moderate to Marked interference with activities

5-6

Severe interference with activities or Unable to Function

Blueprint Adjustments

Blueprint has modified language to ask about medications more generally rather than solely antidepressants, as was done in the original measure.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 1-2 minutes

  • In the context of measurement-based care, clinicians should pay special attention to the third item of the measure, which focuses on the burden associated with medication use.
