Brief Grief Questionnaire (BGQ)
Updated over 4 months ago

Brief Description

The Brief Grief Questionnaire (BGQ) is a concise, 5-item self-report tool designed to assess symptoms of complicated grief in individuals who have experienced a significant loss. Each item on the BGQ asks the respondent to reflect on their grief-related experiences (e.g., "How much does your grief still interfere with your life?"). The BGQ is a useful measure in clinical settings as it allows for quick identification of individuals who may be struggling with complicated grief and helps clinicians decide if further evaluation or intervention is needed.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

Items on the BGQ are rated on a 3-point Likert scale, from “Not at all” (0) to “A lot” (2). Scoring the BGQ involves summing the responses to the five items, yielding a total score ranging from 0 to 10. Higher scores indicate the respondent is experiencing higher emotional disturbance as a result of their grief. For scores of 4 or higher, it is recommended the respondent receive further assessment and intervention for complicated grief from a qualified professional.
