Skin Picking Scale (SPS)
Updated over 4 months ago

Brief Description

The Skin Picking Scale (SPS) is a 6-item self-report instrument designed to evaluate the severity and impact of skin picking disorder (excoriation disorder). This clinical tool assesses various dimensions of the disorder, including the frequency and intensity of skin picking, the urge to pick, and the distress and functional impairment caused by the behavior. The SPS helps clinicians to systematically measure the severity of symptoms, monitor treatment progress, and make informed decisions about therapeutic interventions.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

Respondents rate each item on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 0 to 4. The total score is calculated by summing the scores of all items. The possible total score ranges from 0 to 24. Higher scores indicate greater severity and distress caused by skin picking. A clinically significant cut off score of β‰₯7 suggests high suspicion for a skin picking disorder.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated Completion time: 1-3 minutes.

  • The SPS is meant to enhance clinical decision-making. It should not serve as the sole basis for making a diagnosis.
