Brief Description
The Overcontrol Trait Rating Scale (OC-TRS) is a psychological assessment tool used to measure traits related to overcontrol, which refers to excessive self-regulation and constraint. It is often used as a tool in Radically Open DBT. This scale assesses characteristics such as high levels of conscientiousness, rigidity, and a tendency to suppress or control emotional expressions and behaviors. By evaluating these traits, the scale helps in understanding how overcontrol may affect an individual’s mental health and interpersonal relationships. The scale involves rating various statements or behaviors on a 6-point Likert scale, reflecting how much the respondent agrees with each statement.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
To score the OC-TRS, sum the responses of each item, including applying reverse scores for items 5, 7, 8, 13, 21, 22, and 24. Total scores range from 24-144. Higher scores indicate a higher likelihood of maladaptive overcontrolling traits and are interpreted as follows:
Total Score | Interpretation |
0-72 | Low overcontrol |
73-110 | Moderate overcontrol |
111-140 | High overcontrol |
141-168 | Prototypical overcontrol individual |
Subscale scoring is computed by summing the responses to each item that corresponds to the domain, which is as follows:
Low Openness to Experience: Items 1, 7, 13
Low Affiliation Needs: Items 4, 9, 14
Negative Emotionality: Items 6, 17, 20
Low Positive Emotionality: Items 8, 22, 24
Emotion Expression Inhibition: Items 3, 19, 23
High Moral Certitude: Items 2, 10, 15
Compulsive Striving: Items 5, 11, 16
High Detail-Focused Processing: Items 12, 18, 21
