Brief Description
The Personal Wellbeing Index-Adult (PWI-A) is a self-report tool designed to measure an individual's perceived quality of life across multiple domains. It includes seven items that assess satisfaction in areas such as standard of living, personal health, achieving in life, relationships, safety, community-connectedness, and future security. The measure also includes 2 optional items (Questions 1 and 9) that assess life satisfaction as a whole and satisfaction in the spiritual/religious area of life for those who self-identify as having spiritual or religious beliefs. Respondents rate their satisfaction on a scale, often from 0 (“Completely dissatisfied”) to 10 (“Completely satisfied”). The PWI-A is widely used in research and practice to gauge overall subjective wellbeing and track changes over time. The results can be aggregated to form a composite score representing overall personal wellbeing.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The Personal Wellbeing Index raw data score is calculated by taking the average of the 7 domains inquired about in the measure (i.e., Questions 2-8): standard of living, personal health, achieving in life, relationships, safety, community-connectedness, and future security.
To find the normative range score: Multiply the PWI raw data score by 10. Normative range scores can range from 0-100. Interpretation of normative range scores for the core 7-item version of the measure is in the table below:
Score | Interpretation |
0-49 | Not well |
50-69 | Under well |
70-100 | Well |
Blueprint Adjustments
Blueprint displays the normative range score as the Total Score.
Clinical Considerations
Estimated time for completion: 1-2 minutes.
The PWI-A has been adapted and validated for use with young people aged 12+ years, which is available on Blueprint as the Personal Wellbeing Index-School Children/Adolescents (PWI-SC).
Clinicians should consider interpreting scoring values lower (about 10 percentage points lower is recommended from research with the PWI-Adult) for culturally Asian populations due to cultural response bias and differences in perception around the terms "happiness" and "life satisfaction."
