Brief Description

The Friedman Mini Five Factor Scale (FM5) measures the five core dimensions of personality: emotional stability, openness, agreeableness, extroversion, and conscientiousness. Respondents rate themselves on the adjectives listed (e.g., “At Ease”) on a scale from “Not at all” to “A great deal.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The FM5 contains 15 questions scored on a 6-point Likert scale with values from 0 (“Not at all”) to 5 (“A great deal”). The FM5 contains 5 subscales: emotional stability, openness, agreeableness, extroversion, and conscientiousness. Note, each of the 5 subscales are scored separately (there is no total score). Scores for each subscale are calculated by summing the 3-item responses and ranges from 0 to 15; higher scores are associated with higher levels of identification with that dimension of personality. The following are interpretations of each subscale:

  • People with high scores on emotional stability by definition are high on being at ease, relaxed and peaceful.

  • People with high scores on openness by definition are high on being imaginative, creative and curious.

  • People with high scores on agreeableness by definition are high on being kind, warm and trustful.

  • People with high scores on extroversion by definition are high on being talkative, extroverted, and sociable.

  • People with high scores on conscientiousness by definition are high on being responsible, reliable and practical.
