Brief Description
The Friedman Affect Scale - Negative (FAS-N) measures 15 negative affects, or feelings, as part of the Friedman Affect Scale - Short Form (FAS - Short Form). It comprises 5 of the 10 subscales on the FAS - Short Form (hostility, guilt, sadness, fear, and fatigue). Respondents rate the extent to which they have felt the symptoms listed during the past week (e.g., “Angry”) on a scale from “Very Slightly” to “Extremely.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The FAS-N contains 15 questions scored on a 5-point Likert scale with values from 0 (“Very Slightly”) to 4 (“Extremely”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 60; higher scores are associated with higher levels of negative affect. See the table below for subscales and item numbers that can be summed to obtain subscale scores.
Subscale | Item numbers on Blueprint | Item numbers on full Friedman Affect Scale |
Hostility | 1-3 | 16-18 |
Guilt | 4-6 | 19-21 |
Sadness | 7-9 | 22-24 |
Fear | 10-12 | 25-27 |
Fatigue | 13-15 | 28-30 |
Blueprint Adjustments
Blueprint offers the FAS-N on its own to allow for scoring interpretations of the subscale.
