Brief Description
The Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital (BARC-10) is a self-report measure designed to assess the resources an individual has available to support their recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). Recovery capital refers to the internal and external assets that can aid in initiating and maintaining recovery, such as personal strengths, social supports, physical health, and professional resources. The BARC-10 asks respondents to rate 10 items that evaluate broader aspects of an individual’s environment, including access to recovery-supportive living conditions and community relationships. It is a strength-based assessment that highlights the resources contributing to resilience and coping, which are crucial for adapting to a life in remission from SUD.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
Scoring the BARC-10 involves summing the responses from the 10 items, with each item being rated on a 6-point Likert scale from 1 ("Strongly Disagree") to 6 ("Strongly Agree"). Total scores range from 10-60, with higher scores indicating greater recovery capital. Research has demonstrated the predictive validity of the BARC-10, particularly in identifying individuals likely to sustain remission. Specifically, a cutoff score of 47 or above has been associated with a greater likelihood of maintaining remission for one year or more.
