Brief Description
The Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) is the most widely-used and well-validated tool for measuring recovery for people with mental illness. There are several versions of the RAS, including the RAS-20 item. Based on a process model of recovery, the RAS-20 attempts to assess aspects of recovery with a special focus on hope and self-determination. The RAS-20 is a self-reflective assessment used to measure one’s perception of their recovery. There are 3 domains within the RAS: Clinical Recovery (how they feel about their symptoms and mental illness), Personal Recovery (how they take into account their preferences and choices during the recovery process), and Social Recovery (how they feel about their support system in the recovery process). Respondents rate how they feel about themselves and their lives according to the statements listed (e.g., “I have a desire to succeed”) on a scale from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The RAS-20 contains 20 questions scored on a 5-point Likert scale with values from 1 (“Strongly Disagree”) to 5 (“Strongly Agree”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 20 to 100; higher scores are associated with higher levels of one’s perception of their recovery.
There are also 3 domains within the RAS: Clinical Recovery, Personal Recovery, and Social Recovery. Domain scores can be calculated by averaging the corresponding item scores. See table below.
Subscale | Corresponding Items |
Clinical Recovery | 2, 12, 13, 14 |
Personal Recovery | 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17 |
Social Recovery | 6, 18, 19, 20 |
