Brief Description

The Daily Living Activities–20 (DLA-20) Self-Report is a self-report assessment that evaluates 20 domains of daily living affected by mental illness or disability. Examples of domains, or subscales, include Physical Health and Mental Wellness, Stable Housing, Coping, and Community Norms. Respondents rate how often they engaged in stated activities (e.g., “I managed my moods such as anger, sadness or happiness”) over the past 30 days on a scale from “No, not at all” to “Yes, always.” This assessment of the client’s perceptions of their functioning and well-being is ideally to be used in conjunction with the clinician completed DLA–20 to support important clinical dialogue about progress, goals, and treatment planning.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The DLA-20 Self-Report is scored on a 5-point Likert scale from 1 (“No, not at all”) to 5 (“Yes, always”). Individual item responses of 3 (“Sometimes”) or less indicate an area that could require further assessment.

Each of the 20 domains, or subscales, are scored by averaging the individual item scores in each respective subscale (see table below). The subscale scores can be used in conjunction with the clinician completed DLA-20 to identify similarities and differences between client and clinician perceptions of domains of strength and weakness.

Blueprint automatically produces a “total score.” Please note that for this measure, the subscale scores provide the most clinically relevant data.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 12-24 minutes.

  • Ideally, the DLA-20 Self-Report is used in conjunction with the clinician completed DLA-20 to assess provider-client alignment and misalignment on daily functioning, strengths, and areas for growth.
