Adjustment Disorder New Module-8 (ADNM-8)
Updated over 3 months ago

Brief Description

The Adjustment Disorder New Module-8 (ADNM-8) is a brief 8-item screening tool designed to assess symptoms of Adjustment Disorder as defined by the ICD-11. The measure evaluates how individuals have responded to various acute and chronic stressors within the past two years. Respondents first review a list of potential stressors and select those that have affected them. They then identify the stressor that has caused them the most strain. Following this, the respondent is asked to rank how often they experience Adjustment Disorder symptoms (e.g., “My thoughts often revolve around anything related to the stressful situation”) on a scale from “Never” to “Often.”

Assessment Administration Type

Self-report

Number of questions

8

Age Range for Administration

18+

Recommended Frequency of Administration

No recommended standard frequency; Blueprint recommends monthly.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The ADNM-8 consists of 8 questions scored on a 4-point Likert scale with values from 1 (“Never”) to 4 (“Often”). Scoring the ADNM-8 involves calculating both total and subscale scores by summing the responses. Subscale items are as follows:

Subscale

Items

Preoccupation with the stressor

1, 2, 4, 5

Failure to adopt

3, 6, 7, 8

Total scores range from 8-32, and a cutoff score of 18.5 has been established to indicate likely Adjustment Disorder diagnosis. Subscale scores range from 4-16. Higher scores indicate a greater severity of Adjustment Disorder symptoms.

Blueprint Adjustments

Part one of the ADNM is in Blueprint under the label Adjustment Disorder New Module-8 Life Stressor Screening.

Due to limitations with incorporating write-in information, the final question on the first part of the ADNM-8, which requests respondents to identify major life stressors they have had to adjust to in the past, is not included in Blueprint. To adjust for this, clinicians are encouraged to clarify with the client which life event they identify as the most straining and are referring to when taking this assessment through the course of clinical discussion.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated time for completion: 2-3 minutes

  • The ADNM-8 is meant to enhance clinical decision-making. It should not serve as the sole basis for making a diagnosis.

  • The ADNM-8 is based on symptoms of Adjustment Disorder using ICD-11 criteria. The time frame identified for life stressors on the measure is up to 2 years. For diagnosing Adjustment Disorder, the time frame identified in the DSM-5 is “Once the stressor or its consequences have terminated, the symptoms do not persist for more than an additional 6 months.” Other diagnoses should be considered when symptoms persist longer than this time frame.
