Flourishing Scale (FS)
Updated over 3 months ago

Brief Description

The Flourishing Scale, developed by Diener and colleagues, is a brief measure designed to assess an individual's overall psychological well-being or "flourishing." It consists of 8 statements that capture important aspects of human functioning, such as positive relationships, self-esteem, purpose in life, and engagement with activities. Respondents rate their agreement with each statement on a scale from 1 (“Strongly disagree”) to 7 (“Strongly agree”). The total score reflects the extent to which a person feels they are thriving across various dimensions of life. Higher scores indicate a stronger sense of well-being and flourishing. The scale is widely used in research and clinical settings to understand subjective well-being, going beyond mere happiness to explore deeper aspects of positive psychological functioning. It offers a holistic view of an individual’s mental and emotional health, making it a valuable tool in assessing life satisfaction and personal development.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The FS contains 8 items that are scored on a 7-point Likert scale from 1 (“Strongly disagree”) to 7 (“Strongly agree”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses. Higher scores are indicative of a greater sense of flourishing. However, there are no evidence-based cut-off scores for the FS.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 2-4 minutes

  • Clinicians should consider that cultural, social, and personal factors influence how clients interpret and respond to the FS.

  • While the scale provides a positive assessment of well-being, it does not directly assess psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression). Low scores, however, may indicate an individual is struggling and could likely benefit from further evaluation.

  • The scale can be used to track changes in well-being over time, making it a valuable tool for monitoring therapeutic progress. It is recommended that the FS is not administered more frequently than once a month.
