Brief Description
The Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI) is a useful, valid and reliable questionnaire for measuring mindfulness. It is most suitable in generalized contexts, where knowledge of the Buddhist background of mindfulness cannot be expected. The FMI covers all aspects of mindfulness and has respondents rate how the listed statements of mindfulness (e.g., “I am open to the experience of the present moment”) pertains to them on a scale of “Rarely” to “Almost Always.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The FMI contains 14 questions scored on a 4-point Likert scale from 1 (“Rarely”) to 4 (“Almost always”); note, the last question is reverse scored. A total score is calculated by summing the item scores and ranges from 14 to 56, with higher scores associated with higher levels of mindfulness. There is no cut-off score. The total score is used to track changes in mindfulness over time.
