Brief Description

The DSM-5 Level 2 Anger is a brief assessment that measures anger in adults. It focuses on the internal perceptions and feelings of anger and is used to track anger over time. Respondents rate how often they experience the anger symptoms listed during the past 7 days (e.g., “I was irritated more than people knew.”) on a scale from “Never” to “Always”.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The DSM-5 Level 2 Anger is scored on a 5-point Likert scale from 1 (“Never”) to 5 (“Always”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 5 to 25; higher scores are associated with higher levels of anger severity. See table below for cutoffs and interpretations.

  • There are also child/adolescent and parent-report versions of this measure.

  • Anger is also associated with and a symptom of many mental health disorders, including depression, PTSD, borderline personality disorder and substance use disorders. It may be helpful to evaluate for underlying disorders associated with anger.
